If you haven’t ever built a website the process can be a very intimidating one. If you are doing this project solo it is natural to feel a little bit intimidated. It can even be a risky adventure! Be careful not to reveal too much about yourself, especially in the beginning and take care to make sure that your personal information is protected. One of the first things you need to do when you start to put together your project is to join a well respected web hosting company. But how do you know which hosting company is the best?
Spend some time doing research. There are lots of different hosting companies on the internet who all offer lots of different types of hosting packages. Choose some of the companies that seem like they make good offers and learn all about those companies. It is important to use offline research as well as online research as you investigate the companies. Try to find user reviews. Investigate the business practices of each company that interests you. Learning “too much” about each of your chosen companies is not an option. Remember, these are companies that will potentially have access to your bank account and private information!
Ask a bunch of questions. Make contact with each of the companies you are thinking about buying hosting from. Ask if you can talk to someone who works in the customer service department. You want to avoid any company that does not offer you a live person to speak to. Any company worth trusting will let you have an actual conversation with a live person. If one of your hosting companies cannot prove that they have actual live employees (and not just question and answer bots) they are most likely trying to scam you out of your money. No matter what the size of the company-legitimate operations have live people working for them. Be wary of any company without live representatives!
Investigate how the company is run and does business every day. Bigger hosting operations will be listed with their local business registries. Make sure that, at the very least, the company is registered with the city and state of its corporate headquarters. Check to make sure the business is registered with the Better Business Bureau. Companies worth your money will not have a lot of complaints lodged against them. Avoid doing business with any company not listed with the local business associations. Registering a business with a city and state is required-even for one man operations. Any web hosting company worth your money will be easy to verify through legal means.
Keeping yourself safe from scam artists when you are searching for hosting can feel like a hard task. It is better to be safe now than sorry later. It is not possible to be too careful or to ask too many questions. Do not forget that you will be trading your money for the services that this company offers its customers. Don’t share your private information or bank account information with a company that you do not trust. Scam artists are everywhere and the very last thing you need is to be taken for a ride by one of them. Identity thieves lurk around every corner! Being too careful is impossible.
