The Search For Good Web Hosting
Jul 3rd, 2009 | By Sunny Emmerwitz | Category: Web HostingWeb hosting is a service that provides space on a server for a website to reside, and access to that website for anyone on the Internet. Everyone has different hosting needs, though, and finding a good and reliable web hosting provider is an important step in developing a successful website. And it doesn’t matter if you are running a blog or an ecommerce site, reliable hosting is a must.
Web hosting companies usually own hundreds of servers that they rent out to their customers. They maintain these servers in a place called a data center. They allow the hosting company to maintain the server in terms of security and in terms of temperature.
For all intents and purposes, you can think of web hosting simply as renting space on the internet. It is a place that you are going to build your new home “online”. Because of this, it is vital that you find a good neighborhood that is safe and secure. You also want a good landlord who will live up to his end of the contract that is in place between the two of you.
Since everyone has their own hosting needs, there are many different types of hosting solutions available. Your options are as follows, free web hosting, shared web hosting, dedicated web hosting, and co-location web hosting. Each of these options will allow a person or business to get their website online, but not every option is perfect for your needs.
Free hosting is a good option for smaller sites, but the hosting company’s fees will usually be offset by ads placed on the site. Shared hosting is a relatively affordable option but offers less disk space and bandwidth than other solutions. Still, this is a good choice for smaller websites.
Dedicated servers are a great choice for companies that require a large amount of disk space and bandwidth. Sites that expect high traffic and lots of visitors may need this kind of service to accommodate a large and growing online business. Co-location hosting is the other option for sites of this size, which involves placing the company’s own server in a data center. This is an affordable option, but doesn’t come with the same level of maintenance and support that a dedicated server will.
So the million dollar question is, what do you look for when trying to choose a great hosting provider? There are some standards that you should hold web hosting companies to. Doing so will definitely help you choose the best provider.
Begin by examining the company’s service record. Do they have a history of reliable uptime? What kind of customer service and technical support do they provide? What is the response time to your service requests? Think of your web hosting provider as you would any other landlord. When you need something fixed, or have a problem that needs to be resolved, you will want an immediate response. You can get the full value for your money by asking a few simple questions like these.
